Every identity remains under the authority of the network or manufacturer that issued it: held in its jurisdiction, governed by its rules and revocable at its instruction.
CCI.ID.1 is a communications identity held by a person or organization, not by a phone, a SIM or a number. It is how people call, message and reach you, and it is designed to stay the same when the device, network or application behind it changes. CCI.ID.1 separates the identity from the route used to reach it, and it is designed to supersede the telephone number as the canonical communications identity.
The telephone number does two jobs at once. It is the identifier people give one another, and it is an address within national and international numbering plans that networks use, directly or through lookup, to route communications.
Communications now run across mobile networks, messaging applications, video services and communications platforms, and many of them still use the telephone number as the account identity. Platform usernames exist, but each is confined to its own service.
Number portability lets a number move between carriers. It does not let an identity exist without a number, or reach an endpoint that holds none. Where identity and route are combined, a change of route means a change of identity.
CCI.ID.1 separates the two. The identity stays the same. The route can change.
A person or organization registers a CCI.ID.1 identity, shown by its Color. Authority over the identity is recorded in the CCI identity record.
Endpoints are then authorized under that authority: a phone, a browser, another device or an application. An endpoint can be replaced without changing the identity, and authorization can be withdrawn.
When someone calls or messages the identity, CCI Resolution determines which authorized endpoints currently serve it. A network or platform carries the communication, as it does today.
CCI handles identity, authority and resolution. Networks and platforms keep transport and service delivery, and are designed to be able to operate their own CCI zones under a common trust and resolution framework.
CCI Gateway provides coexistence between CCI-native identity and numbered communications infrastructure. Communication from existing telephone networks into CCI-native endpoints has been implemented, as has bidirectional SMS interworking as demonstrated. Broader interoperability depends on the participating environment. Obligations attached to telephone numbering continue to apply to numbered services during transition.
No. CCI.ID.1 is designed to supersede the telephone number as the canonical communications identity. It does not replace the network. Network providers continue to provide transport and interconnection, and existing numbering, routing and interconnection remain in operation throughout transition, so telephone numbers continue to work. CCI is also designed to support federated and licensee-controlled zones, so network providers can take part in CCI while keeping operational information and local policy in their own systems.
CCI.ID.1 is designed to be issued through authorized registrars: the companies that make your device or its operating system, your network provider, or a communications platform or service you use. Each identity also carries a CCI Name, a unique, human-readable name registered separately from the identity itself.
Registration opens through registrars as they are authorized. Organizations that expect to act as registrars can begin now with the CCI Evaluation License.
CCI.ID.1 is a pre-production specification with a working implementation in engineering evaluation. Built and exercised in engineering against recorded evidence: native identity-to-identity communication, Color resolution, identity persistence across endpoint replacement, browser endpoint termination, two-way communication where the identity reached holds no telephone number, and ingress from legacy networks through CCI Gateway.
Implemented means built and exercised in engineering against recorded evidence. It does not mean formally verified, production-hardened, certified or demonstrated at global scale.
