CCI.ID.1 separates the persistent communications identity from the route used to reach it. Color provides a human-facing visual representation. A CCI Name is a separate human-readable namespace object referring to the same underlying identity.

CCI.ID.1 establishes the communications identity; Color provides its human-facing visual representation. CCI does not see, store or process the content of communications carried between identities.
Authority over a CCI.ID.1 identity is recorded separately from the device, network, application or route that serves it. Participants retain their own systems, services, customer relationships and regulatory responsibilities.
CCI.ID.1 is a persistent communications identity designed to supersede the telephone number as the canonical identity that people and organizations use to call, message and reach one another. It separates the public communications identity from the route used to reach it. The identity can remain constant while the device, network, application or authorized endpoint behind it changes. CCI.ID.1 works with existing telecommunications infrastructure rather than replacing it.
The telephone number does two jobs at once. It is the identifier people give one another, and it is an address within national and international numbering plans that networks use, directly or through lookup, to route communications.
Communications now run across mobile networks, messaging applications, video services and communications platforms, and many of them still use the telephone number as the account identity. Platform usernames exist, but each is confined to its own service.
Number portability lets a number move between carriers. It does not let an identity exist without a number, or reach an endpoint that holds none. Where identity and route are combined, a change of route means a change of identity.
CCI.ID.1 separates the two. The identity stays the same. The route can change.
CCI separates four functions: identity — who is being reached; authority — who controls that identity; resolution — which authorized endpoints currently serve it; and transport — what carries the communication. CCI defines the common identity, authority and resolution framework. Participating communications systems provide transport and service delivery according to their role.
CCI Gateway provides coexistence between CCI-native identity and numbered communications infrastructure. Communication from existing telephone networks into CCI-native endpoints has been implemented, as has bidirectional SMS interworking as demonstrated. Broader interoperability depends on the participating environment. Obligations attached to telephone numbering continue to apply to numbered services during transition.
No. CCI.ID.1 supersedes the telephone number as an identity. It does not replace networks, which continue to provide transport.
The registry function is not yet in live operation. No party is currently authorized to issue CCI.ID.1 identities or open public CCI Name registration, transfer or purchase.
The terms on which identities and CCI Names will be issued will be published before the registry function opens.
